Abstract What happens if historical daydreams derail the vector of European integration? The latest round in dispute between Bulgaria and North Macedonia provides an insight. This analysis discusses Bulgaria’s veto on Union (EU) accession talks with Macedonia, first declared 2019, its manifold consequences. tied consent to Macedonia’s EU country capitulating Bulgarian demands concerning history identity. revived arguments from 1960s 1970s. led a nationalist counter-reaction while at same time complicating work joint expert commission shared established 2017. author highlights unenviable nature position Macedonian members commission, caught as they are their academic ethos diplomatic priorities country. concludes remarks implications for “phantom pains” over Macedonia.
